Denver Study Focuses on Causes, Prevention of Newborn Brain Injuries

Dr. Jennifer Armstrong-Wells in Denver is responsible for the first of its kind newborn brain injury study. Because of the trauma associated with labor and delivery, newborns are at risk for severe brain injuries that can affect their physical and mental development

October 06, 2011 /Health and Fitness PR News/ -- Every day, we hear of new and wonderful advancements in the world of medicine, including new advancements in labor and delivery care. Dr. Jennifer Armstrong-Wells in Denver is responsible for the first of its kind newborn brain injury study. Because of the trauma associated with labor and delivery, newborns are at risk for severe brain injuries that can affect their physical and mental development.

In the U.S., there are six intracranial injuries per 1000 infant births, and the research conducted by Dr. Armstrong-Wells aims to reduce or even prevent newborn brain injuries by studying high-risk mothers before the baby is even born. As part of the study, researchers draw blood from the mother both before and after the birth. They study the blood cord and placenta, and follow the baby long-term.

Dr. Armstrong-Wells states that the cause of these injuries could be blood abnormalities and inflammation. She believes that the results of this study could have an impact on the area of childbirth and the notions that we have about the delivery process of children. In addition, she hopes that the study will aid in prevention of the injuries before they occur.

The Denver area is fortunate to have a well-rounded, skilled community of doctors as a whole and Armstrong-Wells' study will prove very beneficial should it be successful. However, some physicians and medical professionals make mistakes that can have deep, lasting impacts on babies and their families.

If a doctor, nurse or other medical professional was negligent during labor and delivery, the injured child and his or her family may be entitled to damages including medical expenses and future medical treatment. Consult an experienced Denver birth injury attorney if you have questions about newborn brain injuries or other birth injuries.
